Though she won’t be there in Indian Wells, I’ve always had a soft spot for Venus and wish I could see her up close as I did in Miami ’09. Peter Bodo wrote a wonderful post on Vee after she won her third straight event (Dubai, Acapulco, and Tennis Night exhibition at Madison Square Garden). I remember seeing her debut at Wimbly with her cornrows and beads and just loved the uproar that both her and her sister’s presence generated. I love it when folks break through doors that some think aren’t yours to enter. It does the heart and soul good!
Anyway, I’m a Vee fan through and through; I can tell because when she is not performing well, it drives me crazy! I think it’s her quiet presence on the court, those long limbs, and the beautiful way she can play. When I was at the French Open, there was a photo exhibit of Venus by Bar Koto Bolofo that just took my breath away and was a perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon. Here are some of the images I captured on my cell. Shhhhh, don’t tell anyone!
