Verdasco just lost to Fish in two tiebreak sets. I thought he had a chance to go deep but then I remembered that he lost to a fellow Spaniard last year in the same round. Good he’s in doubles, he can still get some play with Feli. I guess he may head to New Haven to defend his title. Am pondering if I should go. Just a train ride away!
Nadal had no trouble with Dent as he won in straight sets with the last being a bit more competitive (7-5). Ferrer took out Querrey; Gulbis took out Melzer in 3 sets and Kohleschrieber took care of Falla. Ooh Kohls meet Fed in next round, if Fed makes it through Istomin match. Yup, these are the days when I have to say an if to 2nd round matches for Fed. Still love ’em though!
The surprise of the day is that Stan went out fairly quickly in two sets to Julien Benneteau. WTF?! Wonder how long this partnership with Lundgren will last? I have yet to see the fruits of this pairing but hey I am bitter! I miss myself some Dimitri.
The big controversy of the day is that some folks think Blake’s WC for USO is wasted. I completely disagree. Blake has had some wonderful runs at the USO over the years and he’s only now begun to dip due to injury. If his downward spiral had been on-going, say for years, I would be the first to trumpet giving his slot to someone else. But if there is the slightest chance that he can go deep, his service to US tennis should be rewarded. Plus, isn’t he getting an award?! How absolutely hypocritical to offer the award for courage and then smite him with the other hand. Sent on the Sprint® Now Network from my BlackBerry®
