Serena Williams, Intersectionality, and Body Image

It has been a very busy week on our podcast. I reached out to Ben Rothenberg of the New York Times to invite him to sit down with the gang and unpack his controversial article about women in tennis and their body image.

A very fruitful conversation emerged about the inspiration for the piece, the blowback from its publishing, and whether Ben has any regrets. The key theme to emerge was that once Serena Williams entered the conversation on body image, Ben should have been more aware of intersectionality, which is the convergence of race, gender, class and other salient identities in the discussion.
